COMMON RULES AND BASIC ETIQUETTE
(that all bridge players should know)
Part 2
Rules
Disposition
of a Penalty Card
Only defenders
may have penalty cards. If the defender with the penalty card is
on
lead, he must lead it. If his partner is on lead, the declarer may require or forbid
the
lead
of that suit (at which point, the penalty card is taken back and is no longer a
penalty
card)
or he may allow the partner to lead anything he wishes and have the penalty
card
remain
– to be played at the first opportunity.
What to Do When an Irregularity Occurs
at the Table
Call the director
(unless you are the dummy, in which case you should wait until the play
is
over). Do not make your own ruling. Most people don't know the rules completely.
The director does
know the rules.
Dummy's Rights
The dummy player
may do three things only: (A) Correct his partner when +declarer leads,
or
is about to lead, from the wrong hand; (B) Ask declarer (after he has discarded
on a trick)
if
he is void in that suit by saying, for example, “no spades, partner?”; (C)
Require that he see
all
the cards as they are played.
Giving a Review
When someone asks
for a review, a complete review (including all passes) should be given by
one
of his opponents.
